the Oval partnership

Sanlitun Village is the realization of the Oval partnership's 'Open City' concept, blending together entertainment, leisure, and world class shopping facilities in one community, right here in Beijing. Housed within 19 separate buildings and interspersed with alleys, courtyards, lanes and squares, we feel it stands for something a little different from the conventional enclosed air-conditioned commercial developments dotted across modern Asia.

Our 'Open City' community was designed with two ideas in mind, open urban quarters and open architecture, aiming to lay down the framework for an open-air and permanent public space. In this way we've been able to incorporate a wide range of designs from a variety of designers and our tenants in just one community. Notable contributors include Kengo Kuma, LOT-EK, adidas and Apple.
At the same time within this framework, our design provides much needed public space for Beijing's residents and visitors, breaking up the development with alleys and courtyards influenced by the Beijing of yesteryear, as well as modern pieces such as our open fountain and little touches from contemporary artists, allowing you to break up your day with a stroll or a sit down. The Orange, located centrally in Village South, also provides the community with a venue for various events, exhibits and performances.

Kengo Kuma

'I adore the hutong atmosphere and shapes and prefer them to the perfect lines and alignments of structures typical of many American developments.

As the Village is central to Beijing, I wanted to adopt a Chinese approach, and create something more sophisticated and varied than the predominant 20th century America-influenced designs.

The choice of building colours is partly logical–green for the luxury hotel, The Opposite House, for a soothing feel, and exciting reds and oranges at Village South to create a more dynamic and energetic mood.

I noticed that old buildings in Sanlitun often use very inexpensive materials, like plastic or corrugated borders. I wanted to translate those methods into a district-scale development of very cool structures. I am thrilled about this challenge - it has revitalised the artistic spirit in me.'
